Appreciating the energetic Hungarian dance
Appreciating the energetic Hungarian dance. Immersing yourself in a windpipe Chinese music ensemble. Enjoying the unique body art Henna DIY. These are just a few examples of the full range of cultural events and activities the recently established Cultural Exchange Oasis (CXO) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has organized, aiming to engage the university community, friends and the public in experiences that will help us to understand and appreciate the beauty of cultural diversity.
CXO was established in the Spring of 2022 to help foster an inclusive environment on campus and beyond, further supporting the University as a leading global university with a diverse campus community.
“We take pride to serve as a melting pot for world cultures to meet and mingle, for educational and cultural institutions to collaborate and build networks, and for students, staff and all stakeholders to connect and interact through cultural exchanges, while creating an inclusive campus and social environment,” said Ms Candy Chouk, Director of CXO.
“In addition to full-fledged Chinese cultural projects and activities, we will expand the scope to develop a diverse range of cultural activities and programmes aimed at promoting multicultural awareness, exchange and understanding,” Ms Chouk added.

Shanxi Cultural Exhibition
Soon after its establishment, CXO rolled out a series of inspiring multicultural activities in the fall of 2022. The Hungarian Cultural Expo, for example, featured a photo exhibition, dancing and music performances, and a talk about studying in Hungary.
Another highlight was the Shanxi Cultural Exhibition which applied various innovative technologies in making exhibits, installations, and interactive activities to show the beauty of Shanxi cultural heritage.
CXO’s calendar was further filled with art and cultural talks and workshops, including a talk on how the problem of ceramic waste could be solved by creating eco-materials for the interior design and building industries. Workshops on Chinese Paper Cutting, Henna Art, and Chinese Traditional Incense were also successfully organized.
Based on the success of these events and activities and the solid foundation the former Chinese Civilisation Centre has built, CXO will continue to serve as a platform to promote multicultural exchange and understanding, thereby supporting the University’s mission as a highly international leading global university. It will expand the intangible Art-in-Residence Programme to the Western cultural heritage. Local culture excursions during the Summer or Winter term will be organized for CityUHK students. A new cultural ambassador programme will be launched to engage CityU students in promoting cultural awareness. It will develop strategic partnerships with cultural organisations, consulates and NGOs to collaborate and attract funding to run signature projects in the years to come.
